Millions of people each year are victims of dog bites. Almost 80,000 bites per
year - one out of every six - are so serious that they require medical
attention. Almost 3000 postal carriers are bitten every year, and sadly, in
2007, 33 persons were killed in dog attacks in the United States.
In Michigan, the law makes dog owners responsible for the bites of their dogs
who do so without provocation, as long as the victim is on public property or
lawfully on private property. There is no such thing in Michigan law as "one
free bite." Even if you are injured by a dog because of the owner's negligence
but are not actually bitten, you are still entitled to compensation under
Michigan law. Most injuries from dogs occur at a person's home, and most
homeowner's insurance policies provide coverage to victims for their injuries.
